The Survivor Diet begins

I know that it's absolutely frakkin ridiculous, but once I set my mind to something I really want to follow through. The operative word is WANT. Whether or not I'll actually make it all the way is debatable.
I've gotten a little too chubs for my taste. I hate the way all my clothes fit and it's just time.
I've tried the diet and exercise thing before and it slowly led to a few pounds here and there being lost. But I want to get drastic. Just once.
Enter the SURVIVOR diet.
I'm a big fan of the show, and it always floors me how much weight contestants lose at the end of thirty nine days. They basically starve, eating handfuls of rice, some fruit, and the occasional fish or two. I know that many are already telling me that it's not the best decision to basically do the same to lose some weight. BUT, I'm a stubborn dork. I'll give it a shot.
So for the next thirty nine days I have given up all good yummy stuff. I plan on eating a half cup of rice, some sort of plain fish, some fruit and veggies here and there and lots of water. I'll even try to exercise.
Let's see if this accomplishes anything.
Before anyone worries too much, I have told my hunny that should I start to get sick or seem to be in bad shape, that she should immediately run to McDonald's and order me a Double Quarter Pounder.

Hello 2012

So, here we are, first day, and first post of 2012!

I enjoyed my final few hours in 2011, spending them with my daughters, my love and oddly, my ex-wife. We hung out on the beach of Walt Disney World's Polynesian resort and took in the spectacular fireworks show over the Magic Kingdom skies. Gorgeous night.

Alas, I have a new sketchbook of a year to draw on, and this is my first page. What better way to do that, than to list some resolutions.

Some of them are cliche, in fact most are, but let's see if 2012 allows me to stay true.

Lose some weight! Lord knows that I have become comfortable in my new relationship and after dealing with some of the stress of last year, I have gained too much weight for my own taste. I don't plan to crazy diet all year. But I would like to lose some weight. Being a slave to the dramatic, I have a radical idea on how to achieve that. I'll get into that plan in tomorrow's entry. That is a great segue into resolution 2!
POST MORE BLOG ENTRIES! My line of work requires a ton of social networking and internet promotion. My good pal Kenny Durkin has it down to a science. He's posted a new blog entry everyday for like two years. This year, if I can do even half that, I'll be happy.
Do more shows. In 2011 I participated in a record number of shows and conventions. 9 shows to be exact. This year I want to do more. I have so much fun doing them and it's fun to keep my crew involved. so look for me at more conventions, shows, festivals, and fairs.
Roll out some webcomics. My mind continues to overflow with ideas, and this year I'd like to set them free. In turn allowing me to collect them and make more comic books.
Move back to Orlando. Living out so far is starting to become a drag. And I miss the "big" city. It'll also save me some gas.
Get caught up and stay caught up with my commissions. I'm sure many of you are reading that and rejoicing at the possibilities.
Sell more work on ebay. I have tons of it, why not make it more available to you guys. I don't need it cluttering the house.
Get my finances in order. Hey, who doesn't have this on their list of New Years Resolutions? Everyone wants that.
Go to Wrestlemania 28. This one should be fairly easily attainable. And fun! The Rock vs John Cena in Miami should be freaking EPIC!
Lastly, continue the drama free life. Since I've been involved in my new relationship, seas seem to just move along so peacefully. It leads to happiness, and love, and just feels right. The stress free relationship is pretty damn amazing. It also allows me to be a better father, companion, and man.

SO, there they are. Quite an undertaking, but maybe not anything too far fetched or unattainable. Best get to work on that list now!

Adios 2011

I kept coming to my blog and telling myself I needed to update it. After all, it had been September since I last bothered.
There was plenty to share, but a lot of it was pretty depressing.
2011 started fairly strong and positive. It looked to be a banner year. Sadly, it ended up slowly dying until the end.
I guess it's not completely true though. The last month had tons of great moments.
This would be the time where I should give my "Year in Review" But I'll spare you all. There was lots of drawing, but not nearly enough. There was money to be made, but not nearly enough. There was drama. Too much of that.
The important part of the year were the relationships. While one came to an unfortunate end, there were more that flourished from that ash. And that's what I reflect on here, before I go to bid farewell to 2011 and welcome in 2012.
For a year, I've had my baby girls here living with me. It's come with an abundance of sacrifices, but I wouldn't change any of it. We also added two little pups to our family. Oreo and Bitty.

Together, the girls and I conquered many a convention. But the highlight came, when we attended Supercon in Miami. There I met old friends for the first time. Meeting Diana, Shelby and Georgia was almost meant to be. Thanks in large part to old friend Bret, we quickly became great friends, and to this moment I think of them as extended family. I adore them and would do anything for them.

At the Same convention I met Toni. Adore is not a strong enough word for what I feel for her. Not even love does the trick. I know that now, over the time we got to know each other, and the relationship that has since blossomed out of it, it's the most real thing I have ever felt. Having been together for quite a while now, and never having the slightest disagreement, I see that a loving relationship between two people can be easy.

Thanks in large part to my friendship with Georgia, more have developed. Again, they seem to be more rediscovered than developed. As if I have known them all my life. Having met Harry, whom has dubbed me an honorary "butt pirate"

Nattie, who has the warmest soul you could ever imagine, and is as unselfish as they come,

and finally Beth, who surprised and inspired me all at the same time,

I truly believe that somehow I have a cosmic connection to this group of amazing and caring group of family and friends.

Between the time I've had with loved ones, and extended family, I know now that 2011, despite it's trying times and stressful moments, turned out to be a success.

If 2012 ends up bringing the much hyped and storied end times, then at this point I believe we'll go out in glory. Because if this trend continues and God continues to bless me with people that I cherish, I am in for an amazing year. Luckily, I won't be alone for the ride.

Galaxgals : The story! Card 3

Georgia felt only a slight pressure of traveling incredible speeds through space. The alien space craft she was in was quiet, and she could hear not even a breath escape her captor.
Within moments, a set of lights like she'd only seen in Star Wars movies engulfed their domed cruiser.
In an instant she blacked out.
It seemed like only a moment, but when she groggily came to, all she could see was a small floating space port with neon light signs advertising live nude aliens.
Georgia took a hard swallow, and held her breath. Things were about to become even stranger.

Georgia was usually a pretty heavy sleeper, but on this night for whatever reason, she awakened to the slight sounds of what could only be described as boogers squishing against a trash can lid.

Before she could turn around everything went black.

Feeling like she had just slept for a year, she opened her groggy eyes only to feel encompassed by the deepest stars in space. She couldn't move, she couldn't speak. Her arms were bound tightly together by a strange vibrating light chain, and seating directly in front of her was a gruesome and green bug eyed space man.

Glancing out the window, Georgia saw a site that terrified her even more. Planet Earth, moving farther and farther away!

Galaxgals : The story! Card 1

Yeah, I guess I had promised this a while back. So here we go with card one. (BTW still working on a few kinks for the website, but it's coming.)

Georgia Star was your typical Midwest farmers daughter. In her very early twenties, she was still at that point that many young girls her age were. Wanting to live life, experience something, ANYTHING different.
She had seen her share of back woods boys, and romped through the corn fields a time or two. She'd even been her high school's Prom Queen.
Still, the sleepy farming community that she lived in presented little excitement, and even less adventure.
Every night, Georgia, who was a good God fearing beauty, would say her prayers and make the same wish.
"Lord, I know you've given me family, friends, fun and looks, but I pray that you'll deliver me a life, read about only in books. And a sleek new car. "
Little did Georgia know, that on THIS night, she'd get more than she'd ever hoped for.

Supercon Wrap up

Holee cow, I have completely forgotten what I was supposed to be doing here, and that is updating THIS blog. So here are a few snapshots of The goings on at Supercon.

One of the cooler highlights (after hanging with the Harts) was getting to meet Cary Elwes of Princess Bride, Robin Hood Men In Tights, and SAW fame. Maya drew a picture of him as Robin Hood, and he seemed 100 percent genuine. Real good guy!

Another, mean looking but good guy was wrestler RAVEN! After coming by my table and seeing some of my wrestling art, he decided he'd like to have his picture done as well. I was happy to oblige!

Some of my favorite commissions were getting to draw in super artist Banky's Monkey with a Pencil sketchbook. Here was my odd contribution.

Got to draw Doomsday for the first time EVER, on a (oops) Marvel cover.

I did a few caricatures too. Here we have a couple of crazy zombies "Tasting the Rainbow."

But oddly enough, my FAVORITE commission of the show was this one. I was given a sketch book and granted the freedom to draw WHATEVER I wanted to. Don't know how I came up with this one, but there ya go!

Okay, now that the wrap up is out of the way, I can get to a cool announcement.......

Art and the Harts

I'll have a full recap of Supercon in the next day or so, but for now, I'd like to share the most special moment to me.
As my friends, family, fans and readers know I have that cool story about meeting, hanging and becoming friends with Bret Hart. That relationship was birthed by being in the right place at the right time, a serendipity of course, and my artwork. I have always said that Bret as a person was absolutely amazing. Truly his persona carried from ring to reality and was also the best. Perhaps it was in his raising. I feel for sure that Stu and Helen Hart molded not only a dynasty for wrestling fans, but the most caring and down to earth family as well.
At Supercon I had a few wrestling pieces on display, including one of course of the Hitman. A couple of beautiful young ladies came over to my table after noticing that piece. One of them asked if I had any other wrestlers. She held up Bret's drawing and stated he was her uncle. Slowly her face became slightly recognizable. She stated that her father had been a wrestler as well. Of course I had to ask who it was, and imagine my shock and delight when she said it was Davey Boy Smith, "The British Bulldog." That connected it for me. I had just seen this young lady, Georgia Smith, interviewed while watching the Hart and Soul Anthology on Netflix a few days before. With her, was her cousin Shelby-Raee' Smith and not to far down the aisle, Diana Hart, wife of Davey, sister of Bret.
What a small world it was.
She came over and we instantly all clicked. I shared the story of my time with Bret, and one in particular of an encounter with Davey. We laughed and smiled. We chatted like old friends newly found. I tried to explain to my daughters exactly who they were meeting, but sadly it became clear that because Davey had passed, they'd never really know.
I promised them a picture of Davey by the end of the show.
I was a bit nervous as I wanted to give them something worthwhile. Surprisingly the piece came rather easily. After all, I'd grown up watching Davey in classic matches with Bret.
When the time came to give them the picture, they were so pleased. They said that Davey Would have appreciated it, and we agreed he was there in the moment somehow. Then a fly came along and was buzzing us all, not leaving us alone. Diana said it must be Owen pranking and teasing. Oddly this all went down on Bret's birthday. We hugged, and laughed and chatted some more, took some pictures, and decided to stay in touch. Diana said that It seemed somehow that fate had lead us all to this moment. Touching and true. As for my girls, they know the Bulldog well now. When we came home I dug out the old VHS tapes and we watched some of the best wrestling matches EVER! To my new friends found, thank you for making the con magical and cool! I feel like there must be some underlying cosmic connection through my art to the Harts.

Pandoora

So sorry for the break in updates. Had to take a few days away to attend Supercon in Miami! I'll have a wrap up on that soon. In the meantime, here is the last character design I have to share.
At Galaxgals all the dancers are very much alien types. In our eyes, they all look odd and strange. Georgia Star, is the exception and so is the mysterious Pandoora. No one knows exactly where she came from, but she seems to be the closest dancer that Georgia will relate to.
There is definitely more to her than meets the eye!
The next post I show will have highlights from Supercon, and then I'll start to show all my cards for this set alone with the bits and pieces of the story.

Obviously, Galaxgals has to be filled with other exotic alien dancers. Of course they are all the female of their race, and oddly, they all have breasts. Goes to show that human men aren't the only one obsessed. I only did twelve cards for this set so I couldn't really feature nearly the amount of crazy races I came up with. So I will show you some of what I used.
Hope you guys are enjoying the characters so far.

Big Lou

Today we get a peek at Big Lou, the very greedy and awful manager of this quadrant's Galaxgals. He's pretty stereotypical as far as seedy club manager's go. Oddly, he's gay, and has a secret guilty earth pleasure. Anytime one of the space thugs journeys to our planet in search of a female to populate the Galaxgals establishments, he has them bring back; KITTENS.
He thinks they are a cute fuzzy snack.

Sketch card sets can be pretty time consuming and even monotonous from time to time. Some of the toughest sets for me can be those featuring characters I've NEVER heard of. Imagine how tough it is to draw fifty cards based on a character with almost zero internet identity and even less reference. It makes you want to cry.

When a set comes along with just a title and the freedom to draw almost anything you want, as long as it stays within the theme, then it feels like a breath of fresh creative air.

But even then, I find myself lacking discipline and direction. I even run into artists block.

With my next two sets I found a way to be original and maintain creative interest.

Let story cards begin.

I wanted to keep the public interested in not only my contributions but the sets themselves as well. So what I have done, is create my cards with their own set of characters and a story that spans each card. I guess it's kind of hard to explain, but I'll try.

With 5finity's upcoming release Galaxgals Eradication (and Badaxe studios Dungeon Dolls) I'll have a new story created entirely for my run of sketch cards. Starting now, I'll be posting the characters designs and info on them here on my blog.

Once those have been posted I'll begin to show each individual sketch card in order along with a piece of the story.

I'll do this until all cards and story pieces have been revealed.

I think it's a neat idea, and it gives sketch card collectors a little bonus to look forward to!

and now 5finity and Locoduck Studios present.....

The idea for this set was pretty wide open and simple. Space Aliens versus hot girls. Leaves a lot of room to play right?

I decided that Galaxgals would be a galactic underground and illegal strip club featuring exotic nude dancers of species from all over the cosmos. Run by alien mob boss Gotti Omega, it would be the biggest club ever. Gotti owns several clubs throughout space and each one is run by a manager from the Sleazoid quadrant. Each Sleazoid has a handful of Gotti's space thugs and uses them to scour the various universes looking for the hottest of females to bring (by force and kidnapping mainly) and perform at the clubs.

Here are the designs for Gotti Omega and one of his Space Thug body guards. Gotti is a total chauvinist and extremely ill tempered. Very picky and very crass. The Space Thugs are usually your typical brainless Goons good for one thing and one thing only, following orders.

WWE Caricatures

I've had my ups and downs with being a WWE fan. In high school I was a rabid obsessed beast. I watched every pay-per view, bought every magazine and toy, and went to every event that came to town. I even won an art design competition with the WWE magazine. My favorites bounced back and forth between, The Ultimate Warrior, Rowdy Roddy Piper, Mr. Perfect, and Bret The Hitman Hart!

Those who know me know that for a while I got to be a pretty good friend of The Hitman. Getting to hang with him backstage, travel with he and his wife at the time, and even chatting on the phone and grabbing dinner with him. After the WWE screwed him, I became disinterested with most of what was out there. And when Bret suffered a stroke, I walked away from the show all together.

Eventually I came back around. Watching some of it here and there. But it wasn't until Bret came back, that I did too. Now once again I find myself a pretty big fan. I'm not as rabid as I once was. I don't order every show, or buy all the toys. And I don't wait around trying to get autographs anymore. Although, meeting the MIZ would be awesome!

Needless to say, wrestlers are an easy go to when I am at work and need to draw someone for attention. Usually they are always recognized by quite a few, and I enjoy drawing them. I even take them to an event if I go to one. The John Cena and Randy Orton pics even got some screen time on an episode of RAW! Not pictured here are a few that some wrestlers have even signed for me out of appreciation.
I don't keep them. I actually give them away, but I am very selective to who. If I come across a fan who seems to be as rabid as I was, or a young fan who enjoys the WWE, I have no problem adding to their enjoyment!
On a side note, as cool as it was to hang with Bret back in the day, I can't even get him to retweet or respond to ANY of my tweets. Ugh, well I guess I got lost in the shuffle of a billion fans. But I won't give up on trying. I follow my past favorite Bret The Hitman Hart ( @brethart ) and my current day favorite The Miz (@mikethemiz )
You can follow almost ANY wrestler on Twitter nowadays. It's a good thing past me didn't have that ability. I'd have never left the house!

A Patch with a Cause

So the good news is, I now have internet and cable in the home again. It was like a Christmas morning to get my own quick connection. For the foreseeable future there will be regular updates and even a step back into Ustream broadcasts.

Lots to blog about, but for now something really important. I was contacted and asked if I would allow the use of the artwork I did of pink astromech droid R2KT to be incorporated into a patch that would be sold with every dime going to charity. Here is more info as taken from R2KT.com

Still no new art

Sorry guys, I'll have a new art post tomorrow.
In the meantime, a bit of news!
I'll be at Spooky Empire's May-Hem event this weekend! Friday May 27-Sunday May 29 at the Wyndham Resort on International Drive. I'll have some classic stuff, original art, new prints and be doing Scare-icatures. So Be sure to swing by!

Also I continue to chip away at my commission list. If your name no longer appears to the right, that means your package is on it's way, or will ship tomorrow. I have a big shipping day planned. I'll be sending about 7 orders out!

The pains of No Net

Well I was on a roll for a while, updating the blog several times a week. I still do not have internet at my house, and my laptop battery is so old, that it has about 2 minutes of juice before it conks out. So that makes me using wi-fi spots difficult unless I can find a plug.
So my internet interaction right now is limited to the occasional libray visit, what I can do at my fiances school, and my phone.
It was nice for a while when I was able to "borrow" someone's non password protected wi-fi in my apartment complex, but they seem to have moved. Bummer.
My plan is to try and prep a few posts a week and upload them at one of the other internet sites so that I can keep you guys informed and keep the posts coming.

So here is some Star Wars Goodness! This was one of my ideas that I submitted for a base card for Galaxy 6. The original was sold, but I wanted to share the scan.

How To Draw: Star Wars Jabba The Hutt

At Megacon this year I was invited to participate in a How To Draw Star Wars panel. I prepared two sessions, one featuring the Rancor and the other Jabba The Hutt.
I figured my blog should be educational as well as entertaining. (well somewhat entertaining)
So here is my first ever How To Tutorial featuring everyones favorite slimy gangster from a galaxy far, far away!

So first and foremost, you want to start with a simple shape. As most artists know, you can draw pretty much everything using basic shapes and pieces. Here we have a piece of doody looking shape. More like a foot, or a kidney.

Once you have your basic Jabba shape, you want to add arms. Jabba has small arms compared to most of his massive fleshy body. Not quite T-Rex small, but tiny nonetheless. Give him a tail as well. You can have it resting down the way he usually seems to have it, but in this case I thought it's be funny to give him a curled elf shoe vibe.

Next we have Jabba's facial features. Pretty much everything on that mug is turned downward. Like he's sleepy, slimy, and unhappy. His mouth-al region stretches almost the entire length of his head and his eyes are pretty buggy as well. Give him two nostrils. One slightly larger than the other. I am guessing that's the one he seems to pick at the most.

You can add even more depth to his expression by giving him eyelids and an open mouth. Open, because we all know Jabba likes to hear himself speak. And I get the feeling he likes to eat as well. In this step you can also give him some little sausage fingers so he can eat said food.

Time to finish up his deep, mean eyeballs, and add the fun stuff. All the juicy rolls of goosh and flab. You can reference those by adding chunk lines here and there. Be sure to give him that lovely double chin. Jabba's arms are a bit differently textured than the rest of his body. They have lines that run down from shoulder to palm.

Once you have all your details in place and are happy with the composition, go in and add inks of you so desire. I'm sure his excellency would appreciate it if you gave him drool, snot and sandy sweat to complete his nasty look.

Lastly, once your inks are done, you can add color until your heart's content. Slime him up!

Jabba's is a sunny mustardy color, with slight hints of toe jam green for good measure. Of course you can experiment with the colors to get a greasy Jabba of your own. Other than that, you are ready to make most wanted posters for all your Bounty Hunter buddies to feast their eyes on!

So there we go folks! First How to Draw tutorial complete. What do you think? Would you like to see more of these? Keep in mind that they will usually be in this more simple style so that even the most novice of artists can follow the steps. I'd love to see any of your finished pieces as well.

Big Daddy Cool Diesel Kevin Nash

I'm a wrestling fan. I used to be an extreme wrestling fan in the 90's.
When I went to Wizard World Miami Kevin Nash was a guest. Now even though I'd met and had the opportunity to hang with him briefly before, that was back in 93.
He jumped from then WWF, to WCW, back to the WWE and lasted for a while in TNA.
Recently the WWE brought him back to fight in the Royal Rumble. Diesel made such a monster splash that it seemed like a no brainer for the WWE to use him. They signed him to a Legends contract but have since to use this monster again.
It was a great pleasure introducing my daughters to him, and at the show I did a quick draw in my more cartoon style of Big Daddy Cool.

I've always been a big fan of photography. In high school I was photography editor for my Yearbook staff, and even now I enjoy taking pictures.
A little over a week ago this picture was snapped of me drawing at the Wilderness Lodge by photographer extraordinaire Chris Genau.
I think the photo is beautiful. Not because of the model obviously, but I like the lighting, the feel, the composition and the depth to it. It looks as though it could be a photo for a commercial advertisement.
Chris took a few other photos of me as well, and there is one other I'd love to get from him if he's willing to share.
Thank you Chris! This is the kind of legacy photo I will adore and hope that my daughters will too.

Although informative, I know it's a bit of a bland post, so I'll steal a page from my friend Kenny Durkin and post an interesting photo I found on the net here instead.

Okay, so a few tight deadlines were made, and there isn't an immediate con in sight that needs my attention, so I can FINALLY clear off my commission list.
I was able to get everything organized and ready to mow through.
Unless an act of God stops me, I should be through my list by the end of the month. Either, way here is the best way to check the progress of your order.
To the right I have a commission list. It is in the current order I am working on things. As I complete one, I will remove it. For the most part I plan to tackle them chronologically.

Scream 4

Woohoo! Look at me starting the week with yet another blog post. I'd like to tell you to get used to this, but we all know that eventually the blog will start lacking. But for now let's roll with it!

I always get a kick out of the way Ghost Face cocks his head to the side and looks at his
dying victims as some sort of curiosity.

Every now and then I'll try to toss up a movie review. I don't get the chance to go see new flicks as much as I'd like to, but I promise that when I do I'll try and write about it, and if I'm feeling really productive, you'll get an accompanying illustration. Now onto the review!
BEWARE MATEYS! THAR BE SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
Don't read much more or I WILL spoil the movie for you. You have been warned.
It's been ten years since Scream hit theaters. It was quite frankly the movie that gave rebirth to the horror slasher flicks we all love to be scared and grossed out by. I'm glad it opened the doors for some crazy, scary movies to creep their way into our culture.
Scream 4 opens up by taking not one, but two "Stabs" at itself. Treating us to a handful of hottie celeb deaths. If your a big fan of Anna Paquin, you may want to close your eyes during her cameo.
After moving through the classic Ghostface on the line killer opening we transition to Woodsborro, where David Arquette is now playing the town Sheriff, and his lovely wife Courtney Cox is sludging through her ten year removal of star reporter and fighting writers block while being Mrs. Dewey.
Sydney Prescott played by the now much more mature looking Neve Campbell has written a self help book about survivng her ordeal, and her infamous hometown is the last stop on her book tour.
Of course, with that we have our usual dose of Ghostface killings spattering the story. Some of the death sequences are more graphic then ever. In one scene Sydney's cousin Jill, played by Emma Roberts watches as one of her best friends is gutted. Almost literally. The scene with the actual intestines on the beds will leave you hungry for more. Nummers.
The story line itself does a fairly good job of distancing itself from the same old same old, but still remains faithful to the series.
Emma Roberts does a great job as the cousin longing for Sydney's spotlight. She really sells the screen time as innocent victim and then does a convincing job as the psycho killer who orchestrates it all.
In the end you find yourself believing for a split second that she'll get away with killing Sydney and moving into her role. I kind of wish they Kevin Williamson had gone that route instead. Allowing Roberts character Jill to actually get away with it.
My biggest complaints about the movie are pretty shallow. The first is Hayden Panitiere's hairstyle. Really? She did a great job in the movie and was probably one of the better characters but her short hair just killed it for me.
Another complaint is how they seemed to just force Courtney Cox into the script for the sake of having her there.
And while I adore mine, boy could this movie have been a walking advertisement for the iphone. Almost EVERY character had one. And that's okay with me, but the fact that aside from Dewey using the Axel Foley theme from Beverly Hills Cop, ALL of them used that same generic SAMBA ringtone, and NO ONE changed their wallpaper/screensaver. See I told you it was a shallow complaint.
Other than that, I enjoyed the movie a lot. It was nice to see them reference two of my favorites in SAW and Shaun of the Dead.
Definitely better than 2 and 3, but as Sydney says after putting a bullet through her psycho cousin's head, "Don't fuck with the original!"

I wish I had so much more artwork from my favorite artists. I'm trying to work hard to rectify that situation. It's on my bucket list of things to do.
Doing more conventions will help me to achieve that goal.
Here is what my bedroom wall is looking like. I have a few originals in my living room as well.
My Holy Grail in the center is an original sketch of J. Scott Campbell's Abbey Chase from Danger Girl. I got the piece when I met him at the CTN ANimation expo in Burbank. It actually made me a little sick that more people weren't flocked all over his art demonstrations, but I took it with a grain of salt because most people were there to see their animation favorites. It just meant more to we fans that knew his amazing work and wanted some one on one time to ask questions and watch in awe as he worked. Before I had actually gotten to meet him, he had noticed a drawing of my Chewbacca, and complimented it. So to cap that trip off with an original made it worth the whole trip.
Next to it have a print of the Black Cat I acquired from him at Megacon this year.
I also have a piece from Scott Blair, and Mike "UrbanPop" Hammer from Wizard Miami, a piece from Echo Chernik, and an awesome Count from Sesame Street done by Poopbird Mike Groves. (I have an original from him I need to frame as well)
Lastly there is a piece from some duck guy. But the content is awesome. Showcasing my two baby girls. I think that's why I liked it enough to frame and include with these greats.
I hope this inspiring wall continues to grow!

I have to say this was a commission, and the request called for a SUPER SEXY HERMOINE. So I aged her a bit, and this was the end result.
Hawt!
A small story for those of you who don't know, but I was mercilessly ridiculed as a teen in high school for the way I drew my girls. A handful of douche bag bullies tended to tell me that my girls looked "ugly"and like "guys"
That kind of negativity didn't drive me into a corner to pity myself, nor did it make me give up. Instead it pushed me to draw some of the sexiest most cheese cake drenched darlings I could.
I'd say it's taken some time, but mission accomplished. Many people who collect my work actually know me for my babe-a-licious ilustrations and I wear that badge with pride today.
In closing I'd just like to say to all of you ass monkeys with the negativity. Fuck you, fuck you very much.

MEGACON 2011 Wrap-up

SO less than one month after doing Miami, it was time for another con. FINALLY, the DUCK had come back.....to MEGACON!!! (of course, my con buddy Dennis was at my side!)

Wanting to make things special for the girls, I decided to let them dress up for the event. What a dedicated daddy! Not only did I manage to prep for the show, but I also put two costumes together for the show. Maya decided to be Poison Ivy. I decided the adult version was a bit much for my 6 year old, so we made her Petite Posion Ivy, or Lil Ivy as we called her.

Maya kept her costume on for all of about an hour before she was done. She got some attention at the show as well. Getting several nods from the more grown up versions Ivy and even the occasional picture request. See it's Posion Ivy times 2!

But Hailey's HITGIRL seemed to bring the most attention. She decided to keep count of all the pictures people asked to take of her. 66 was her final count. But there were several others nabbing pictures as they walked by.

There were a few other Hitgirls in attendance as well. Hailey was worried her costume wouldn't look right. But I'd say we did a good job.

And my favorite HitGirl picture of the show was with Kick Ass himself. WIN!

And while not MY daughter, she could call me big daddy if she wanted to. Damn did I say that out loud?

There were a ton of other cool costumes at the show. I wish I had been able to snap more photos but I was glued to my table most of the show. Check out this smoking Tigra!

And Maya, didn't ham it up as much as the last show, but she still snuck into a picture or two.

As did I. Jessica Allen Steele as an Abbey Chase that you just HAVE to see in person to appreciate how great she looks.

And Speaking of Abbey Chase. The amazing J. Scott Campbell was in attendance at this years show. I had to get my daughters over to his table to meet the man who I truly believe has been my biggest personal hero and inspiration in art.

Another inspiring and talented guy was my other table neighbor, Mike Groves also known as POOPBIRD! So naturally when you put a Locoduck next to a Poopbird, the feathers are sure to fly. I wanted to strangle him for being so mega awesome.

This years show also brought a first for me. I got to participate in a How To Draw Star Wars panel with Jason Sobol, Rhiannon Owens, and James "Buckshot" Buchasas (spelling?). Hitgirl took the picture but, that's me on the far right.

I taught the crown how to draw a cool cartoon Rancor monster, and had some cool results. It was nice to see that my steps were easy to follow. This gal took the fact that I drew at Disney and incorporated it into her draw. She also won the original!

This little guy did such a good job as well that he took home an original piece too. A wookie I had drawn!

As much fun as that was, I had commissions that needed finishing as well. Like this Thundarr!

And since Cartoon Zombies are what sells for me, I had to do this poor ill-fated Woody.

Overall we had a great time at Megacon, and while I didn't get to walk around nearly as much as I wanted to, I am sure we will be back again next year!

Wizard World Miami

Wow, it's been a whole month since I've posted anything to my blog. I will state again what a pain in the ass it is to not have regular internet access, but rest assured, I have blog entries planned for the next several days. I'm trying to get back on track. I'm a bit behind on card sets, and commissions but have put a plan in motion to have everything done and ready to ship by the 18th. Well maybe the 19th since dreaded tax day is on my target date. I also plan on updating the blog a bit and merging it a little with my website.
Okay, so on to the good stuff. I've done two conventions in the past two months so we will start with my report from Wizard World Miami!!

This was the first time I had done Wizard World Miami, and the first time Wizard held a show there. It was a last minute invite, and a last minute decision to go. We almost didn't make it as my fiance got sick at the zero hour and she was driving. But absolutely refusing to miss out, I threw my two co-pilots in the car and we headed out. Not too bad of a set up.

Hailey had done conventions with me before but she was especially excited about this one. One of our favorite items for sale, (and the con goers as well) was the little ashcan book I put together called Justin VS. It was a fun little 24 page book with many fun and creative ways to see Justin B bite the dust. She was a bit reluctant, but my youngest let me use her doll to push sales.

I was set up next to my good bud Dennis Hart. We had a blast working together as usual. Sometimes it's hard to consider this work when you have so much fun with such awesomely talented people.

We drew caricatures at the show as well. Anywhere I go, I just can't escape that calling. Always a crowd pleaser and a definite money maker.

Maya even sold her first original. I had to capture the first dollar sale she ever made.

And Hailey busted her ass off at the show to sell for daddy. Hands down the best booth babe a guy could ask for.

Of course she paused for her fair share of pictures as well.

And I had to as well. I'm a sucker for a good Red Riding Hood.

Ultimately however, Maya proves to be the biggest ham when it comes to posing for pictures. Here she is with the super sexy Black Cat.

I took the girls over to meet WWE superstar and one of my favorites of all time, Big Daddy Cool Diesel Kevin Nash. He was super pleasant with them, and Maya made the statement, "I can't stand next to him, I'm too little."

He must've found her adorable enough to hook her up with an autograph, which she is super proud of.

The show wasn't all play and no work for me. I did a handful of commissions. Sadly I only got pictures of a few. A Kit Fisto,

Star Wars Galaxy 6 Base Card Art

I think that since the set officially hits the streets tomorrow, it's okay to finally share my base card art for Galaxy 6.
TADA!!

One of the biggest goals I wanted to achieve working with Topps was to contribute a base card for the regular set. It took some time but FINALLY, after 5ish years, that goal has been scored!
I had a handful of ideas that I submitted, and one was for a hammerhead to be roughing up a few Jawas in the cantina.
I was quickly reminded that the Ithorians were a peaceful race. I blanked. Which were the Ithorians?!? The Jawas or the Hammerheads? After looking it up on the internet I had my answer and restructured my Hammerhead to be a little more peaceful.
I'm pretty jazzed about this and happy with my coloring job too. Now that that goal is out of the way, I'm looking toward making that first million!

ENGAGED!

This is another sweet piece of news that happened over the holidays, but I am just now able to share. And believe me, it's been tough holding it back.
But yes it's true. There is going to be a new MRS DUCK!
I'd been putting pennies together for a while. Scraping and scrounging. Early in November I finally had the rock in hand. It was just a matter of being sure, and finding the right moment, because Lord knows, I am all about the moment.
To celebrate our two year anniversary, my baby took me out to St. Petersburg for a romantic and high class dinner at Chateau France. The whole night was gorgeous, and the ring was snug in my pocket. But that moment was so elusive.
Then over desert, as she was nibbling on her Crepes Suzette, a small drizzle of ice cream slipped off her fork and onto of all things, HER RING FINGER! It slowly draped itself over and formed a sweet, cool, creamy band, and at that moment I KNEW!
SO I popped down on one knee, saying it was time.
She tensed up. A good, anxious tension. A smile and a small look of sweet but excited fear crept into her brow. "It's time?" she claimed.
I told her that I felt alive when I was with her, and that my life with her was an adventure I wanted to share forever.
The yes came quickly, without hesitation.
Moments later, we were serenaded by a French song bird. As I held my future wife's hand, La Vie En Rose whispered softly in the background.
High on the moment and a bit of bubbly, we took a crisp nights walk to the bayside. There, after sharing a romantic kiss under twinkling Christmas covered trees, I took my beautiful queen by the hand and we climbed into a Cinderella horse drawn carriage. Ending the evening in an embrace and a ride around the park.
To say I am happy is an understatement. Summer of 2012 Jaime Turner will complete me!

The NEWS!

So December and January have been some trying and tough months for the duck, but have also included some truly amazing moments! In mid November I got word that due to some unfortunate events, my daughters would be coming to live with me for the time being. Now anyone that knows me, realizes that this is indeed one of the best pieces of news I could get. Especially since prior to that they were living a thousand miles away. I was a little upset to say the least that they were basically kicked out, but thrilled at the idea of having them here.
The thing that scared me though was that I was living in a hotel at the time and very close to penniless. I managed to pull together the funds to go and get them, but upon returning, realized that a hotel room is not a home for my girls. Fortunately, thanks to the power of prayer and a BIG assist from my Florida family, we were able to be in an apartment by the New Year!
We don't have much, (they sleep on an air mattress for the time being) but at least it's a home, and we are together! If anyone wants to donate furniture (contact me via email) or funds, the paypal is locoduck@locoduck.com ;0)
So while mom gets her situation worked out, daddy has his babies home. And that makes me happy. It made for a GREAT Christmas present.

Due to the tightness of funds, I have NO Cable...and worse NO INTERNET. So forgive the sparse updates and communication. Most of what I do, I do on my cell phone.

I will also be attending Wizard World Miami in February! And Megacon in March!

Just wrapped up sketch card work on various projects including Star Wars Galaxy 6, Lady Death, and Femforce!

In the works are projects with Upperdeck (Marvel Beginnings, and Thor) 5Finity (Manga Mandy, Sheena) Badaxe studios (Dungeon Dolls) and Sadlittles (Luxura)

Pair all this with the big news above, and things are looking pretty good!

Many of you have been wondering what hole I have fallen into and I apologize for that.
The month of December brought about many amazing and fantastic changes, but alas brought me a few set backs as well.
I will give a much larger update in the next few days, but the most important one I can tell you is that my daughters are living with me for now. We also have found a home as opposed to a hotel, but the downside is I have extremely limited internet access for the time being. (Only my Iphone in the house, and libraries, McDonalds, and Hot Spots here and there) No longer even have cable.
But I will try to get to those spots at least two or three times a week.
Anyone on any social network sites that may try to contact me there should note that I can access twitter, facebook, and some others but CANNOT chat there. So do not be offended if you try to chat me and get no response.
The New Year has brought tons of changes, and I'm in the process of preparing for them.

SAW WEEK Day Three

I'd say hands down that Tobin Bell's incarnation as John AKA Jigsaw is the most iconic character in the SAW franchise. Not only does the series revolve around the traps that his mind creates, and the philosophy of appreciating one's life, but his voice eerily carries the movies "games." When you hear him speak through his puppet Billy, you can almost feel the chill run down the back of your neck.
As slightly off as his arguably evil ideals are, you can't help but be pulled in by his personality and presence.
So today I did a profile caricature (go figure) of Tobin Bell as Jigsaw. And tossed a flair of artsy fartsy to it.
SAW 3D begins screenings in less than 24 hours.

SAW WEEK: Day two

SO as much as I love the SAW movies, I have to admit that the first time I saw pigface, I thought it was a bit ridiculous. But as the movies progressed, so did my appreciation for how wonderfully creepy he was.
So I decided to give the character a stab. Obviously I didn't draw him in the traditional style, and opted to keep with an animated cartoon feel.

SAW Week Day one

SO I'm obviously a monster fan of the SAW franchise, and this Friday the final chapter will be told in the forthcoming SAW 3D.
As Jigsaw might say, "I Want to play a game."
To celebrate it's arrival I'm going to be doing one piece a day relating to the films until the 29th when it hits theaters.
Anyone who has seen the movies knows that once the TV set turns on and you see that familiar puppet staring back at you, you'll have some choices to make, and make quickly, or kiss your ass good-bye.
So my game this week, is to save my little Locoduck from a Jigsaw trap by creating a new piece every day until the movie opens. If I succeed, Loco goes free. If I fail, it will be roast duck for dinner. The choice is mine, I must choose wisely. HA HA HA HA HA.

Cartoon Graveyard

Cartoon Graveyard is about to prove that none are safe from the zombie epidemic. The peaceful and usually happy Cartoon Town has been rocked by a strange zombie like virus. Leaving none of our treasured toons safe, it is spreading like wildfire. Cartoon Graveyard is a parody book that documents the tragic event. The book will feature zombie parodies of some of your favorite cartoon, and advertising characters like DEAD FLINSTONE.

The book will debut at Spooky Empire's Ultimate Horror Weekend in a very limited run. It will later be available for purchase on the web as well. Lots of crazy takes on our childhood friends, and a book that I am very proud to have put together! Be sure to get yours!

Spooky Empire's Ultimate Horror Weekend

So it looks like it's official. I will be attending the Ultimate Horror Weekend at The Wyndham Hotel in Orlando October 8-10. I'll be setting up as a guest, and have my partner in crime Dennis Hart to maximize damage to faces.
It's my first time doing this show, and I am pretty jazzed. I never quite realized what a hidden horror nut I was, and boy do we have some goodies in store.
Not only will we be doing some gruesome DEAD-ICatures at the show, but I will have not one, but 2 new books to reveal, and several new prints.
I'll share some of the swag in the next few days.
Should be a FUN show. There will no doubt be a host of super awesome crazy horror fans in attendance, and I'll have the opportunity to meet horror icons like Robert (Freddy Krueger) Englund, and Elvira. The Bad ass Machete, Danny Trejo will be at the show as well.
So please keep your eyes closely peeled for new updates and one to two or maybe even three, more con announcements.

Since I am swamped with prep for the show, and some straggling commissions, A Boy And His Wookiee will take a short hiatus but be back in November!

I'm very lucky to be participating in Axebone's upcoming hot pirate girls trading card set appropriately titled Treasure Chests and Booty! In addition to the 25 sketch cards I contributed (all in full color), I'll be doing a base card as well. I'm super stoked to be a part of this set and there is some AMAZING and beautiful work from many other talented artists as well.

The set maybe aimed at an older audience, but from what I have seen, that older audience is in for a great treat. Especially if they appreciate the fairer sex.

Well, of course I mean catch up. A lot of things slowed me down over the summer, some pleasantly (my daughters) some not so much (my lack of finances)
I still reside in a hotel, while most of my life is still in storage.
Fortunately, there is the light at the end of my tunnel. I feel like I am in a great groove artistically. Making the most of my limited workspace to produce cool art. My finances are sneaking into shape again, and it looks like I will be able to make a big visit to the post office on Monday. SO if any of you are waiting on packages look out for them.
I've updated my workload and the status on the right hand column.

Today's strip is a memorial to Katie Johnson. I had detailed some of her story on my blog sometime last year. She is the darling who inspired pink astromech droid R2-KT. You can read more about her on her site . Today is the 5th anniversary of her passing and I thought it only fitting to pay her tribute. Through her, and the amazing little droid that encompasses her legacy, many children, friends, fans, and families have found happiness and hope.
It's also a bittersweet farewell to my little girls who will be returning home to Texas tomorrow. I'll miss them so, but just as the thoughts of Katie continue to bring a smile to her daddy's face, so to will the summer memories we built bring a smile to mine. Cheers R2 (Katie) I look forward to meeting you this Sunday at CV!

Star Wars Celebration V

I have to admit, I was a little bummed that they chose so few of the hundreds of Star Wars artists out there to attend the show in an official capacity. I was really looking forward to an invite, as were many other artists, especially since I had been invited to Star Wars Celebration Japan. The Orange county convention center is certainly large enough to hold a lot more of us Star Wars artists. Plus I had some great ideas for prints.

But alas, I will still be there.

Sadly, most of the time the show is going on, I will be busy returning my little ewoks home to Texas. So the only day I will be in attendance at the show is Sunday. The good news is, if anyone is looking to meet me, I'll have a spot.

From 12 - 2 pm you can find Michael "locoduck" Duron hanging out at the SWGFA booth #1520. (along the same row as the Hasbro booth) I'll be drawing black and white Star Wars themed caricatures, and I'll have some goodies to give away. I'm going to have a limited print of sort to give away as well. And if anyone spots me throughout the show and says they read this, I'll hook you up with a special freebie as well.

UP in the Air

I know it's a movie. It's a damn good movie. But oddly enough, I feel somewhat that it is also the point I'm at in life. Oddly there is a bit of a rock bottom I have fallen into. Many fears are lingering, but much promise is on the horizon as well.

I have been living in a hotel room since the first week in June. It claims to have wi-fi access, but I have to be sitting in the bathroom or on the floor by the door to get any decent access. To make matters worse my passion feels as though it's been ripped away. My entire studio is in storage, and as a result I have been slacking in my art. I feel it, and know I want to draw, but I can't motivate myself to follow through because my creative space is gone.

Plus a hotel is a not a home. The one salvation is the fact that my daughters are here. At least for now, until mid August. Then I feel as if this place loses all "Home" and becomes a prison. I know that my girlfriend is experiencing much of the same. But many issues led to our forced time off. And it's hopefully only a matter of time before we both make our way back "home."

In the meanwhile I have managed to light the creative fire. I'm drawing again. Forcing myself out of my artistic fail. I'll share work soon, but in the meanwhile, I hope you are enjoying the Boy and His Wookiee strips.

As you can imagine, Death Star Daycare center is going to have it's share of factions, cliques, and bullies. Here are a few of them.
The most feared of course would be Lil Vader. Quiet for the most part, but always in control. No one messes with him or his Empire Patrol People.

And of course there is (literally) the biggest bully of them all. Big J and his sidekick lackey Crumbs.

Of course, there will be all sorts of other bad boy incarnates like Boba, Greedo, Maul, and others.

Death Star Daycare

Sorry guys. I know the idea was to start the A Boy and His Wookie strip on Memorial Day, but I have spent the past two weeks trying to keep my head and life together. While it may not be there yet, it's a little closer. So here is an update on the strip.
I figured the Little Bodies Star Wars characters needed a good backdrop for their adventures. The daycare/school had to embody something iconic about the Star Wars universe as well.
So here is the setting where the strip will take place. I give you the Death Star Daycare Center.
I won't promise that I have updates planned everyday but I am about ready to start showing the strips.

Lost : The End

Sunday was the series finale for ABC's LOST. I came into the show about two years ago, getting to watch the first four seasons on DVD. I really don't think I could have made it had I watched year to year.

It was one helluva show. mixing human emotion with sci-fi and fantasy. Over the years however, it created a lot of questions. Questions like everyone else, I wanted to see answered.

Unfortunately, the series finale didn't deliver on a lot of those. But what it did deliver was a two and a half hour roller coaster ride of emotions and tears for many. (Myself included)

I was oddly satisfied by the end. I think it was because I applied it to my life as well. It took on some sharp comparisons to what I am currently going through. After it was over, I felt the need to sleep on it, and the next morning while taking the longest shower of my life, I found myself sinking into the message at the end. To let go and move forward.

This year has been an awakening for myself as well. I have learned to let go of many things that had created hurt, fear, anger and my own private smoke monster. I feel now like I am at that church in the finale, ready to let go, to move forward.

Believe it or not, this has been in the works for over 10 years. I got a bug sometime back to do a Star Wars fan art comic strip. The idea behind it posing the question, "What if all the characters from Star

Wars went to school together as kids?"

I conjured up a few images, and had a few ideas, but it never came to fruition.
The idea however, has always been in the back of my mind.
After having completed work on several Topps Star Wars sets (a dream come true in itself,) I garnered a lot more experience with the characters and their universe. I have also grown as an artist, and a writer since then, and I decided now, that with all the excitement surrounding the anniversary of Empire Strikes Back, and Celebration V, it was as good a time as any to revisit the idea.
So, armed with close to three months of material already, and on this the 30th anniversary of my favorite Star Wars movie "The Empire Strikes Back," I announce "A Boy and His Wookie"
Above is the teaser image, and next week I'll divulge many of the character designs and a little more background. The plan is to begin running the strip on Memorial Day.
It will run Monday through Friday the first week, and then Tuesdays and Thursdays from that point forward.

Been a while I guess.

I went out of town and visited with my little darlins which always takes priority over anything else. Everytime I go it gets just a little harder to say goodbye.

But that's why I haven't posted much lately. I have tons of new stuff to post, but we'll have to start with some recent sketch card commissions featuring one of my more personal and favorite little bodies style.

I actually have a webstrip in the works utilizing this style. I'll get to it as soon as I can get out from some of the sketch cards I am buried under.

Biggest Fattest Loser.

So the duck is on a diet. You know there tends to come a time when you should realize that you are getting a little too fat for your own good. I've known that I was at that point for a while now, but the tender allure of a double quarter pounder, or a half dozen twinkies always helped me to look in the other direction.
Enter the Biggest Loser.

By chance I happened to stumble across an episode and I was hooked and impressed by the weight that these people were dropping. I knew that I could do that too.

Of course I was delusional to assume that I could lose 40 pounds in a week the way some of the contestants did, but I was bound and determined nonetheless.

I became smitten with Jillian Michaels as well. Figuring she was worth training to anyway.
So I set a goal in mind. I figured 25 pounds in three weeks was reasonable.

My first course was to cut away soda. THAT task in itself has been the most difficult. Especially with my recent love affair with Pepsi throw back. But I was determined to make it water, milk, juice, and the occasional tea and very rare mixed drink. To this day I have been soda free for 2 weeks.

After that I started in on the diet. I cut my calorie intake dramatically. Now I am almost pathetic obsessed with it. I look at every think now for it's calorie count. Haven't had more than about 1200-1500 calories a day. Usually it's even less. But I learned that I needed to eat more to burn more. So I am allowing my body at least the 1500-1800 mark everyday. Still trying to eat healthy. Lots of veggies, fruits, and fish. ( I sneak in a few wings here and there, but my body seems to be okay with that)

Then there's the exercise.
I bought a Biggest Loser cardio Dvd, and have been faithfully hitting it everyday for the past 8 days except for one break day. I sweat like a monster though. But the burn feels pretty good.
I wanted to just apply cardio and not build muscle so I could drop the weight, and then build muscle. But after chatting with my buddy Keelan, I decided that I would heed his advice and try and build muscle, since apparently THAT burns fat faster.

The scale has been an up and down oddball of a ride. I started at 225 and change. Then in the first few days I dropped to 220. Then in the next few I gained 4, lost one, gained one, gained half. I'm not sure what the hell my body is doing. The good news is, that it seems to be doing what it's supposed to now.

I'm happy to report that as of today I am down to 219!
I'm not sure that I'll hit my three week goal. But I do have to say that I am feeling a lot better, and determined to keep the duck from looking like that picture.

It's so late tonight. Or early in the morning, whichever you want to go by. But I am sick as a dog, or my allergies are bothering the crap outta me. I tried to sleep but it's hard to sleep comfortably when your eyes feel like they are going to combust and breathing is a struggle. And since clinics don't open until later on, I'm trying to keep busy, without exerting myself.
So what does that mean? New Blog entry, Hooray.
Here is a Slave Leia done as a commission. I went full on watercolor with this baby with the exception of a few marker areas.
I also tried a toonier approach with her as well. Diggin the way old Dead Jabba came out too!
Anyway, more later, I am going to TRY and fall back asleep. Doesn't help that I have to work ALL day tomorrow.

This would be one of those "cope" pieces. Often in life when I am in a mood, I draw something to convey that mood. Whether it be happy, sad, whatever. I guess enough time has passed to show this moment in life. When my now defunct marriage was going through it's stages of slow decline, my ex was making new "friends" on of all places Myspace. One of these friends was a guy way out in Riverside California. She had a huge thing for him, conveniently forgetting that she had a husband as well. They exchanged phone numbers and one day when her phone rang I saw the caller ID. It was him, he who she had so affectionately dubbed her "Snoopy."
If the punch to the face wasn't enough, she had to go and take one of my beloved childhood favorites and bastardize it by giving her forbidden Myspace love it's nickname.
Needless to say from that point forward I started to have a huge distain for Snoopy and the Peanuts in general. Everytime I saw them I saw the guy my ex was making a play for.
After things had seemingly resolved themselves, we were on vacation in Corpus Christi with her folks. Low and behold, we found ourselves eating at a seafood restaurant called, Snoopy's.
This drawing was a result of my feelings during that meal.

Since sometime has passed since that disaster has sailed it's course, I find myself coming back to terms with the Peanuts gang. But I figured it was a funny enough drawing, and now as I look back on it, an even more absurd tale.

Miss me? Wow, getting close to 2 months since I posted anything. Truth is I have been battling a bout of depression since after the holiday. Visiting my girls and leaving them is always so hard, and the holidays seem to add to that. It's nothing clinical, just a series of hard times and rough spots. Through it all I think the artwork has kept me somewhat sane. And I am hoping I see a silver lining in my future.
I wrapped up 200 Star Wars Galaxy 5 cards but I am behind in showing these, my Clone Wars Widevision returns. I have one more not shown here as well.

Rocky Horror

These were a commission done for a Christmas gift. I guess the recipient is a huge fan. I remember really liking the music to the movie when I was in high school. And if you haven't ever experienced a live showing of it, I highly recommend it at least once in your life time. Very odd, and a lot twisted, this flick has a massive cult following. The fact that Tim Curry is the star just adds to it's appeal. I guess some folks might have been uncomfortable doing the pieces, but to me it was a delight and gave me a chance to think back to some good memories.

Steven Frank and 5finity productions opted to put together a card set based on Dean Yeagle's super sexy character Mandy. I was invited to contribute sketch cards to the set as a rare artist. Meaning I only contributed the above 8 cards. It was an awesome honor to be a part of the set, especially because of Dean's influence on my work and my love for the character. I put as much effort into the cards as I could and had a blast. the first three cards were my returns, and the other five went into packs. So needless to say pulling one of mine is tough chore. Of my returns, the Dino Mandy has been sold to someone attempting a master set, and I gave Dean Yeagle the Cheerleader card as a token of my appreciation. So that leaves me with one. The Mermaid Mandy. The card is not only my remaining return, but is also signed by Dean Yeagle. At this point I am keeping it for myself. But you know, money talks. LOL.
Anyway, this was great fun! The next one to be released was even more of a killer!

One of those bad nights

I came home from work tonight only to find that my girlfriend hadn't been home yet. So I tried texting and tried calling, but got no answer. Now she is a hard working teacher, always dedicating herself to her kids and her classroom, so staying late is no big deal, she does it often. Still, as 1 am trickled in, I started to become un-nerved. Was she okay? Was she cheating on me? Her daughter had not heard from her either, so I jumped in my car, and made the drive down to her school. Nothing. Then I swang by her mom's house. Not there either. I started to boil over, get a little angry. Lord knows based on my marriage and the infidelity that came from my ex-wife, that I have issues with insecurity.
So I made my way home, sat in the living room trying to work and waited. Waited, and waited more. Finally around 4 am there was a key jingle at the front door. As it opened I heard her speak, and then I heard a male voice respond. My heart started racing, I clenched my fists. How was I going to handle THIS? Then the door pushed open further, and I saw her silhouette and then HIS! WTF!?! She had brought another man into our home!? I was about to scream, when I heard her crying, and the I heard the man speak again. This time there was a familiarity to his voice. Then finally the light bulb hit. It was her step-father.
Come to find out she had stopped at the store on the way home from work, and evidently passed out in the parking lot. When she came to, she was in the hospital attached to an IV and all kinds of little electrode things. Her phone had died, and her mom didn't know my cell number. My sweet little bonehead of an almost step-daughter hadn't answered her phone when they tried her. I was relieved and horrified all the same. I kept picturing my baby sprawled out on the ground. Had she hit her head? How long was she there before anyone noticed? She said the doctors almost had to hook her up to a respirator because she was non-responsive.
I kind of wanted to kick myself for even thinking she'd strayed, but you know given my history, you may understand why I did.
Needless to say, I spent the last three hours by her side, and counting my blessings she's okay. But now I'm pooped, emotionally drained and in need of a nap.

Things to come

I've been slaving away over a portfolio/valentine book of sorts. It's all about Indiana Jones, and is in full color. It's called the Book of Jones, and it will be ready in time for Star Wars Fan Days 3.
So how can you get one? Well chances are you can't. See it's not a book I will be selling. It's going to have an excruciatingly limited print run and the only way to get it, is if I give it away. I am handing them out to a select few as gifts and I may give away a few extra to some customers. But it's totally NOT for profit. Just for fun, as a way to give something back.
I'll post more images from it as the show gets closer.

Saw

I can't really say that I have ever really been THAT big a fan of any franchise horror flicks. I think Freddy and Jason are cool. And I enjoy a really cool horror flick from time to time. The Descent and Drag Me To Hell were a few of my favorites. But other than that, aside from The Indiana Jones and Star Wars movies, no franchise has really stuck with me.
I watched the first Saw movie some years back, and was entertained and caught off guard by the twist at the end. But other than that, I never had much of a desire to see any of the follow ups. Then Universal's Halloween Horror Nights added Saw to the mix this year. They talked about the fact that the Haunted House based on it would feature traps and scenes from the Saw franchise. So I figured it was time to catch up. After all, I like to be in the loop of things I am going to see at HHN.
So I rented Saw 2 and 3, and was hooked. Damn, even more plot twists, a captivating villain, and a killer soundtrack. 4 and 5 didn't really let me down either.
So after I was caught up, I kept thinking about the movies, and had to go see the first one all over again to see the little twists and intricate story lines I had missed. And the movie grew on me even more.
A lot of folks complain that it's like torture porn. But I don't really see it that way. What gets me more about the movie is the characters, the plot twists, and yeah some of the mechanics behind the traps that come up. How people make the choices they do. And really that the damn movies are all about valuing your life.
It seems odd that I can go on for so long about a franchise like Saw, but I have to be honest, I rank these movies as my personal favorites up there with Darth Vader and Indiana Jones.
I want to play a game. Can there be much they have in common with Tobin Bell? Can you the reader make any connections? I actually can see several. Can you? Let the game begin.

Pissed Off Pato

Okay, so several months back I drew a cartoon of a messy pig to illustrate how gross it was to work at a caricature stand after a messy person. I posted this drawing on a private company blog and it too on a life of it's own. The powers that be ended up creating a few other animal toons as well. But my favorite of the bunch was Positive Panda. He was the animal we were supposed to focus on when things might not be as bang up at work as they could be. When sales were slow, or it rained all day, we should always stay positive.
So when September settles in and sales tend to slump it's expected that you may have a slow night here and there. Those nights become "learn nights" as opposed to "earn nights." Nights where we focus on our craft, hone our abilities.
Last week I had one of those nights at a typically good location. I drew 2 pictures. That's right, over a 5 hour span. 2. But through it all I remained Positive Panda. Chalking the night up to a September slouch. The very next night I saw the same thing happening, but I stayed Positive Panda. And after some chatting and laughing and free add ons, (I would color the black and white pictures free to keep a butt in the chair and effectively advertise to other guests) I had an okay night.
This week I was back at the first location for a second time this week. I had a fairly decent showing there a few days ago, and then tonight hit. I had one of the worst nights ever. There wasn't any level of positivity that could break through it. I spoke to the handful of people that did come by.

"So how long will one take?"
" 5 to 10 minutes."
"Great we will be back tomorrow."
"No one is here now, I can take care of you in a hurry."
"Well we have dinner reservations."
"I can start the pictures and finish them up while you eat, what a time saver."
"No that's okay, but we'll definitely be here tomorrow."

I had that conversation several times. Told people where the bathroom was, pointed out restaurants, and smiled. I smiled a lot. Positive Panda. Then I drew a little kid, free of charge to try and drum up some business. Nothing. Lots of compliments and aw how cute's. But no sales.
Then a pulled a demo, a fantastic face with a big mustache. His family took pictures and laughed.

"We definitely need to come back for this after dinner."

They never came back for it. But they got photo's of it for a nice prize.

As the night progressed and my poor back screamed in pain from standing there, I began to lose sight of that Panda, and inside I was growing a little pissed off. But I still smiled. Smiled A lot. I wondered how I could get stuck with the crappiest total two weeks in a row. Who had I pissed off? Was God giving me a sign that maybe I needed a new profession?

I ended up doing 1 picture tonight. One. But even while closing and answering one last question from a family of four who was "coming back tomorrow" I smiled.

Then I cussed like a sailor all the way to my car.

My nickname is Locoduck. Duck in spanish is Pato.

Tonight I created a new little animal. Sorry Panda, for now I'm just one Pissed Off Pato.

Busy times are on the horizon. One card set I am working on is Topps upcoming Star Wars The Clone Wars Widevision set. These cards are a beaut as they give me a lot more room to work with. I'll be doing one hundred (Attempted full color) cards. The catch? Mine are only going to be available in retail packs this time around. Guess that will make them harder to track.
Either way, It's going to be a blast! I am working on a few other sets as well, but more on those later.

This piece was originally simply a donation piece for the Marla Bea Benefit auction. I decided to do this one and the Black Cat piece as well. And while I am proud of both, I simply love and adore the Star Wars piece the best.
You see it started as me trying to draw something unique for the auction. The requirement was that we draw a strong female type from pop culture and feature the color pink. I thought about it for a long while and realized it would be cool to make a pink Artoo unit. So that was the plan.
Then this past weekend I was at Mini Megacon checking out the exhibitors. I came across the Florida Garrison of the 501st Legion. These guys are a class act all over the world. If I had a Stormtrooper outfit I would totally join. Maybe I'll start building one at the Star Wars Fan Days 3 show in October.
Anyway, I noticed a pink Artoo action figure at their booth, and struck up a conversation with one of the guys there. I apologize in advance for being too sloppy to get a name. I wanted to know if it was indeed a female droid? Low and behold there was, and she had a name, R2KT.
He went on to share the story in brief about young Katie Johnson. She was a beautiful little girl with an affection for R2, and a losing battle with Brain Cancer. Now if I have this a little off, I am sorry for my poor detailing. Apparently, her father was in the midst of building Katie her very own pink astromech droid when she took a turn for the worse. Some of the professional R2 robot builders then stepped in and created a real life pink R2 unit, and called it R2KT. Sadly, Katie lost her fight with cancer and passed away sometime after. So now R2KT has become a staple in the Star Wars world. She is an ambassador of sorts, making appearances at Hospitals, and functions, and continuing to bring more awareness to cancer. The droid was even featured briefly in the Clone Wars movie.
After hearing Katie's story I knew I had made the right choice to draw this piece.
This drawing became more emotional for me as well because of the fact that my little girls had just left me, to go back to Texas. But I guess I should thank my stars, that I can still call them or see them.
So my heart and thoughts go out to Katie Johnson's daddy, and it is very hard to now part with this piece. But the positive side is that it will help to bring us in someway closer to saving future Katie's.

Personal Heroes: George Lopez

I'm not coping well with the fact that my daughters left me today, so in order to keep some sort of distraction I'll make a post about one of my personal heroes. George Lopez.

I'm not exactly sure where I first stumbled upon George Lopez. I'd heard of him before, and even seen him in Shark Boy and Lava Girl, but I don't think it was until I became aware of his show on Nick at Nite that I got a better appreciation for the man as a comedian. All I knew is that after watching the first episode in reruns, I was hooked. I don't recall ever laughing quite so hard at a sitcom as I had this one.

I'm sure there was some attraction to him ( and no I don't mean it like that, cochinos!) because of the obvious Chicano connection. After all I am LOCOduck, But I related to the humor as well because that's what I grew up around myself. It's odd to note as well that George Lopez seems to be the perfect mutation of two people, my step-father; a typical stereo-typical Mexican Alpha Male cut-out, who aside from the various bruises and fantastic insults, I gained two note worthy things from. A sense of perverted humor, (including a healthy addiction to porn, THANKS Orozco) and an appreciation for segundo barrio oldies. Then there is my biological Dad, ( who while yeah, didn't stick around for reasons that would require an entirely new blog post) was the nurturing, intelligent and supportive male figure in my life. Not to mention, that I think he and George Lopez do look oddly alike.

If you pushed my two hispanic father figures into one, I sincerely think George Lopez would be the result. In his situation and stand up acts, I hear the barrage of Mexican curse words my step father would use until I pissed myself laughing, some of the same mannuerisms are there as well. Hell the opening "Low Rider" song was a staple in my step-father's tape deck. But then there are samples of my bio-dad as well, George Lopez is one superbly intelligent man, goal driven, and family oriented, he seems like he would give you the shirt off his back, much like my father.

Therein lies more of the respect and connection.

But let's face facts, George Lopez is one really funny "buey." I have watched his HBO special "Tall, Dark and Chicano" about 4 times now. It was filmed live in San Antonio where any of my regular readers know my heart lives it's second home. I find something new to laugh at every damn time I see it. Whether it's the jokes about burritos and McCaca's, the latter of which just tickled my little girls, or his facial expressions, the man is comic gold.

He gives the Latino community a superbly respectable face, dresses like a modern day "Jaime Bond" and is cherished by so many. I think HE was the reason I was willing to sit through Beverly Hills Chihuahua, (which I ended up really liking and buying.)

As you can see I have a world of admiration and respect for the man. He remains high on my list of people I'd love to meet. And he's the kind of Latino I'd like to grow old and become.

Muchas Gracias George, you make one helluva man.

I was invited a few months back to participate in a card set for sadlittles.com called Legends and Lore. But was even more awesome was I was given the opportunity to create a base card for the set. I have to admit I was a little bummed by the subject when I got it. "King Arthur!?" I thought. COme on, where was my chance to draw a cheese cake-ish red riding hood? I had no idea where I was going with it. But finally I came up with the most iconic (at least in my opinion) image of King Arthur. The Sword In The Stone. So this is what I came up! Have to admit I was pretty happy with the end result after all, and I can't wait to see it in print!

The Greatest American Hero

I have thinned my commission and job list down once more. I see the light at the end of the tunnel. I just wrapped up a handful of sketch cards for Sadlittles.com Legends and Lore set. I need to now crunch down and move 40 cards out the door for The March of Dimes charity sketch card set featuring the Greatest American Hero. Here is a quick character study and reference I put together. While I love the show, and have the first season on DVD it's nice to have a quick study I can look at.
A few other items of note. I have a small webcam now and am setting up a ustream account so that anyone who wants to can watch what I am working on. More details and schedule to follow soon. On the right of my blog as well will be a current workload list. If you have work coming from me, refer to it.
Okay off to bed. Have to enjoy my last day at 33.

Rolla Coasta of Life

Hey gang. I know it's been almost a month since my last post. I have to admit that I knew they would be spread out, but this was a ridiculous length of time. So there have been a lot of positives in that amount of time, but it's been a proverbial climb. About two weeks ago I jumped on a plane to go and bring my little darlin daughters home. The trip was a 15 hour marathon consisting of me boarding a plane to Texas at 9 am and returning home with them that same night at 11 pm. Needless to say, I packed pretty light. And leave it to me to keep drawing caricatures of sort at 3500 feet. For whatever reason, I decided to draw Southwest Airlines flight attendant (And budding author) Angela.

She was so gracious in accepting the picture that I became somewhat of a mini celebrity on the flight out, at least with the first half of the cabin. My apologies to everyone else I didn't get to draw. Maybe I can exchange caricature art for airline tickets. LOL.
When I got to Bandera Texas I scooped up my lovelies and we made the track back home. It was so awesome to be bringing them home for basically the whole summer. They were superstars all the way home. At the airport in Orlando while waiting for their luggage I snapped a pic of what in my opinion has to be one of the best Star Wars weekends ads ever.

Wish I had gotten to attend this year. The next few days saw me finishing packing up my life, and the three of us heading to the house of Mouse. Got to meet Tinkerbell which was cool. Then move week started. And it was a nightmare. The second night in our new place, and there was a massive lightning storm that took out a house a few homes over. It caused havok to the electricity and cable, leaving me internet-less and air conditioned impaired. The cable company ran a temporary line and before the day was over, a lawn guy ran it over and disconnected my world wide web once again. A few days later we were back on-line and I had managed to move just about all the heavy stuff into my second story studio. I was ready to get set up and working. After all the heavy lifting I had done the week before, it was a small box that took me off my feet and effectively destroying my back and keeping me bed ridden and un-able to do almost anything but wince and cry like a 1st grade girl. I have managed to miss work because of the intense pain and the inability to sit for longer than a few hours. And once again my personal workload is piling up on me.
So here I lie still in bed, finally managing to put some thought together long enough to update you guys. I've managed to pull a little tray by my bedside so I can do some drawing to try and ease the load. So that be that. But ultimately all is well because I have my little mini ducks at my side for now.

Well yes, the post is about UP, (and so is the three minute cave art you see here) and it's about many other things. Beware my readers, it be one of them looong winded posts.
I had the chance to see a few movies over the past week. Some were with my hunny bunny in a theater, while others were playing on the tube while I was working. And although the race was tight, UP edged out Drag Me To Hell by a hair. What a beautiful flick Pixar has put together. I had heard that the first few minutes were better than any love story out there today. And it is so true, once again, the mix of music, beautiful animated human emotions and story that Pixar is so good at floored me. But more on UP in a bit. '

Drag Me To Hell was an unexpected and pleasant surprise. The fact that that my girlfriend wanted to see it was in itself a bit inspiring. To be honest I wanted to see it because the title amused me. So we made our way to a midnight showing, and I was instantly wrapped up in the grossness, the over the top moody sounds, the jump moments, the camp, the soundtrack, the delicious throwback to older horror flick films (right down the oddly grainy projection itself.) I had a really good time at this movie. My brother made a good point though, asking if it was a horror movie or a comedy. I couldn't really answer. I simply said, "It's a Sam Raimi." And a breath of fresh air.

Other movies I saw kind of ran together. Vickie Christy Barcelona, The Spirit, The Wrestler, Paul Blart: Mall Cop, Max Payne. Yeah, honestly nothing to write about, (although I really had better hopes for liking The Wrestler)

I managed to get quite a bit of artwork done too. Finished all my Archie cards (scans to come soon), I got several commissions done. Including these delightfully foot filled cards

and the boat caricature below. And I continue to line up my never ending list. I finished a base card for Sadlittles Legend and Lore set (wish I could show it) But I am really enjoying my drawing time.

For those of you waiting on cards, please continue to be patient. I know how hard the wait can be. I am in the same boat, awaiting almost a year now for a sketch. I also must add that my schedule is going to become overloaded the next few weeks since my girlfriend Jaime and I have decided to move in together. We have a beautiful home lined up to rent, and one of the best parts is, I will be bringing my little girls home for the summer. Of course, the move, the trip to get my babies, yeah, it's all happening over the next two weeks. So I beg for your continued tolerance.

Oh and side note two. I was at church with Jaime a couple of weeks ago, and this passage stuck to me, leading me to evaluate and recognize one thing, ( Corinthians 15:33 says, Do not be mislead. Bad Company corrupts good character.) I AM NOT BAD COMPANY.

Anyway, this I guess brings us back full circle to UP. For those who have seen it, you know the way it ends, with blessing of a new adventure. I have braved through my black clouds. And with my move, my babies, my new love.....the only place life can continue to go is UP. Onwards to adventure a new.

PS Also on a new Upward adventure is my brother from another mother Kenny Durkin. Congrats to he and his new blushing bride Andi. I love you guys!!!

The photos I got for this were not as clear as I would have liked them to be in the sense that they didn't show the faces of the coaches too well. So I decided it best to for a more simplified cartoon approach. It was received with great enthusiasm!

I love these characters and I am starting to enjoy coloring on my computer a little more. It's a bit time consuming, but worth the effort. This is what I work on usually when I don't have access to all my art supplies. I have a handful of commissions I am working on as well. And don't forget to get your Toony Bin entries in. I have seen some awesome entries so far.
